Altai ethographical

Altai is a place where Turkic tribes: the Tubalars, the Chelkans, the Kumandyns, the Chors, the Telengites, the Teles, the Teleuts have been living since the time immemorial. Their common collective name is the Altai people. Their languages belong to the Eastern branch of the Turkic group, the Kerguiz-Kypchak subgroup. Three hundred years ago Russian old-believers fled from persecutions to the Altai. Their descendants live in the villages Verkh-Uymon, Multa, Gagarka in the Ust-Koksinsk Region. In the 70-ies of the XIX century the Kazakh people came to the steppe Chuyskaya, the south of Altai, in search of new pastures for their cattle. Nowadays the Kazakh people constitute more than 60% of the inhabitants of the Kosh-Agach Region. For the last 100 years the life of the Altai people has changed, but at the same time much has remained. Just like a hundred years ago, the Altai and Kazakh people are occupied mainly by nomad cattle-breeding and hunting, and the Russian peasants by agriculture. Antiquities are carefully saved by enthusiasts-lovers of history - in village museums set up by them. One can get acquianted with the traditional culture and the life of the Altai people in the Altai Cultural Centre in the settlement Chemal and in the museums situated in the Altai settlements Kulada and Mendur-Sokkon. A museum of old-believers was founded in the settlement Verkh-Uymon. A museum in the settlement Jana-Aul is dedicated to the Kazakh people and the moslem culture. Folk music traditions and folk crafts have been preserved. National festivals are celebrated. While organizing a tour the interests of tourists are taking into consideration.
